Nate Kramer

I hired him initially to take a fairly complex [magazine] design and turn it into a real working platform. That job quickly became more complicated than the original description. Publishing systems, user roles, advertiser flows, payments, hosting, security, migrations, email infrastructure, AI tools, live weather and marine data, maps, and quite a few ideas we discovered along the way. Through all of it, Nate has been remarkably responsive. And I don’t just mean answering messages quickly. He actually responds to the problem. That’s an important distinction. When something doesn’t make sense, he flags it. When my files contradict each other, he asks. When there’s a better way to build something, he explains why. When he doesn’t know something yet, he says so, goes and figures it out, and comes back with options. I’ve never gotten the feeling that he’s throwing technical language at me to make something sound harder than it is. I’m not a developer. I’m a designer and entrepreneur who tends to ask a lot of "wouldn’t it be cool if..." questions. Nate has been unusually good at taking those questions seriously without letting them turn into nonsense. The thing I’ve appreciated most is that he hasn’t treated this like a list of tickets. He collaborates. We’ve kicked ideas back and forth, challenged things, changed direction, thrown some ideas away and made others better. That’s how I believe good products actually get built. The scope has grown considerably since we started, and he’s handled that with patience, humor and a genuine interest in making the product better rather than nickel-and-diming every conversation. He’s also just a good human to work with. That matters to me. I originally went looking for a developer who could execute a design. What I found was someone I trust enough to keep bringing into other projects. This means I’m probably not going away anytime soon. Highly recommended. Just don’t book all of his time.
